How to cut and paste a pdf file on a mac

The file has no security, and is clearly text, not image. Using Mac Preview, I can select text and select copy, but nothing is copied to the clipboard. The Mac system allows me to select Paste into another program, but nothing is pasted. In Acrobat Pro I can select and copy text, but when pasting into another program Word or Mac Text Edit the text shows only as question marks. Acrobat Pro says the text is Times New Roman, but the font name of the pasted question marks in Word shows as gibberish.

If I change the font in Word to something like Arial, the question marks turn into blank squares. I can choose "Edit PDF", and enter my own text directly into the pdf file. Acrobat Pro indicates no distinction between the text I entered and the text already in the file; i. However when I copy a line of text including original text plus the text I typed in, and paste it into Word, the text I typed is visible but the original text is only question marks.

It makes no difference if I copy "with formatting" or without. Acrobat Pro will not allow me to change the font of the original text. I examined the copied text in a Hex editor. The text I typed into the pdf is regular ASCII characters, but the original text consists of apparently non-printable characters Hex 80 and higher. But in Acrobat or Preview, all the text appears normal and prints fine.

The Properties of this strange file indicates the pdf producer was Ghostscript 9. The file is a public document and I would be happy to provide a piece of it.

Are you serious? That's crazy. I just copied and pasted your comment into this reply and we should be able to do the same thing in a pdf document that has already had the OCR ran on. My problem is that I have highlighted some of the text in the pdf and I can't copy and paste the selection I want.

As soon as I put my cursor where I want to start my copied text, the highlighted text box is chosen. After I get out of the editing mode in Acrobat I should be able to highlight whatever I want to. My biggest problem is that Adobe's help is practically non-existent. I have yet to get answers to problems I have in Acrobat anywhere on Adobe. There is no way to ask a question unless I have. I'm sorry for my reply. I think it was kind of rude.

I am just frustrated that I am having such a problem with copying and pasting part of a pdf and I just think I shouldn't have to go through all that with Tiff files. I also don't know how to do what Bernd said to do. My problem is that I could copy and paste before I highlighted parts of the pdf. But now I can't select part of text of highlighted text and other non-highlighted text. Also, I wanted to select text of 2 highlighted text that is next to each other but wasn't allowed to select the text.

Every time I try to select text of highlighted text the highlighted text box opens. Then I can't select the text I want to copy.

I have to copy everything in the highlighted box. Then I have to do the same thing to the other highlighted text box. I thought that after I highlighted text and got out of editing mode, the text would just be shown as highlighted and it wouldn't keep showing the highlighted boxes. Whatever it is, it's likely that the document you need to fill in is a PDF. That's all fine, but it can be annoying to have to print it out, fill it in with a pen which requires actual writing! Nobody wants to be wasting their time with those shenanigans.

So, what do you do when faced with PDF forms. Luckily it is easy to fill in a PDF on your Mac, and you don't have to buy expensive software to do so.

Depending on the version of macOS you are using, the PDF editing tools are either built in to Quick Look which, shows you a preview of a document when you press the spacebar , or you can open the PDF in the Preview app and access tools to add text to the PDF as well as highlight, underline and strikethrough text, rotate pages, add and remove pages, add arrows and other shapes, and add comments to PDFs. But if you'd like to have a bit more flexibility when it comes to editing a PDF - including changing the existing text - there are a number of dedicated apps that can take your PDF editing to the next level.

Quick Look is a great tool for opening a preview of anything on your Mac without needing to open the software associated with it. You can preview any document by locating it in the Finder or if it's on your desktop you can access it there. Just click on the file to select it and press the spacebar. You can also add your signature all from within this Quick Look preview. To do so, follow these steps:.

If that is the case adding text is a simple case of clicking in the correct area and typing. If the text boxes aren't set up correctly, you'll need to create a text box yourself, here's how:.
